1. Curtis Portage Creek Bridge

Curtis Portage Creek Bridge is a popular spot for anglers looking to catch brook trout and other freshwater species. The bridge provides easy access, allowing you to cast your line right from the structure. The calm, flowing waters make it an ideal location for a peaceful fishing experience.

2. South Manistique Lake Public Access

Located at the southern end of Manistique Lake, this public access area is perfect for shore fishing. The site is equipped with a parking area, making it convenient for anglers to walk down and set up. The diverse fish population, including walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass, promises a rewarding fishing trip.

3. North Manistique Lake Shoreline

The northern shoreline of Manistique Lake offers multiple spots for bank fishing. With plenty of open areas and fewer crowds, you can enjoy a quiet day of fishing. This spot is great for catching perch and bluegill, especially during the early morning or late afternoon.

4. Big Manistique Lake Fishing Pier

5. Manistique River Mouth

6. Fox River

Fox River, famous for being Ernest Hemingway's favorite fishing spot, is easily accessible for shore fishing. The river's clear waters are home to a healthy population of brook trout. The scenic surroundings add to the charm of fishing at this historical spot. Fun fact! Did you know that Hemingway often wrote about his experiences fishing on the Fox River, but it's said he named those experiences "The Two Hearted" (a river a bit more northeast) because "it sounded more romantic." You can fish on parts of the FOX via side of the road pull off spots. Look for "East Branch of the Fox River" on the way to Grand Marais.


If you want to fish the FOX River, you can stay at Northland Outfitters Campground for a local safe place to rest your head.


Fishing without a boat is possible and if you stay at Northland Outfitters, they have kayaks and canoes for rent.

7. Wolf Creek

The Portage Angler Club maintains Wolf Creek which was recently rebuilt after a storm. A strange waterspout-style tornado-non-tornado storm took it out and the club was able to pull people resources together to make this beautiful opportunity happen again. This pier has a bench and is accessible. It sits on South Manistique Lake and offers fishing for perch, bass, walleye, northern Pike, Bluegill, and more. Fishing Manistique Lake without a Boat is certainly possible and very fun!
