"The Mitten State" - because the state itself is shaped like two mittens stitched on top of each other. Apologies if you already know this...you may be surprised how many folk do not know their geography!
Fun Fact! Michigan traded the Upper Peninsula for Toledo, Ohio in a territory trade-off in the 19th century. It's true... everyone hates Ohio and has for centuries!

Michigan is home to numerous diverse and beautiful attractions. Here are the ten most visited locations in Michigan:

Where will you go visit in Michigan?
It's funny to think that many people assume that Michigan is all similar to "Flint" with bad water... or "Detroit" with "So Much Crime" or "Ugly" because there are a lot of machine shops and plants there to manufacture everything the world uses. That's beautiful.... just sometimes greasy. These destinations showcase the diverse beauty and rich cultural heritage of Michigan, making it a must-visit state for travelers.
What many people don't know is that Michigan is also beautiful, serene, and peaceful. That's called "Up North" and where that starts depends on where you're from.
Really Up North is also known as "the Yoop" or "The Upper Peninsula of Michigan" if you're not from there.
A hidden gem of the country that is hidden for a reason. It is a magical location full of wonder and sites to behold. And danger.
People come here and die every year when they go on vacation... hiking frozen waterfalls, snowmobiling over frozen lakes, kayaking Lake Superior...
These adventures are REAL. Not really pretty I'm going to go take a selfie. So be prepared.
There isn't phone signal UP there in the Yoop in many places and if there is, it's probably not the phone service provider that you have. I'm not saying you need a satellite phone by any means, we never have issues and go out all the time-- but, if you're accident-prone and always have to call someone for help, you won't be able to in many places UP here.
"Visit Up North" is a true vacation destination in itself for many states but Michigan takes the cake. This is a trip of a lifetime. One that many families have done once with their families as a BIG SHABANG and then decided to come every year.
Note: You are said to be a YOOPER if you were born and raised in the Upper Peninsula or if you've lived there for 25 years or more straight through. If not, you're a Troll, or someone from below the bridge. However, there is a growing number of people TRYING to be a YOOPER and so we appropriately call them TROOPERS... it's tough to live UP here. Most people can't make it a week without freaking out about the bugs or the lack of Starbucks on every corner. In fact... I think there are two on our side of the Yoop. One in Meijer's in The Soo and one in Escanaba. (If you're not from UP here, the reason that is funny is because those are the two anchor towns for Eastern Yoop residents (aside from Marquette which is The Big City and has everything) and these two cities, The Soo (Sault Saint Marie) and Escanaba are about 3 hours apart.
Visiting UP NORTH is not for the faint of heart or those who don't like nature.
If you're still reading this, you'll love it here. The beauty is unmatched by anything I've ever seen and I've lived in Hawaii. The peace and tranquility you can have if you want it is attainable and affordable. The luxury you can have if you want it is super cool and not always booked. It's a true gem and you'll love the Upper Peninsula of Michigan but don't tell anyone what it's really like so it stays pretty.
